Nepal’s first mall theatre

the opening of a new theatre on the seventh floor of Kathmandu Mall. With that, it has officially become the first theatre in a shopping complex in Nepal. Named the Theatre Mall, it also hosts a theatre centre for children. With live performances for both the old and young, customers and theatre lovers will surely be spoiled for choices. On its first day, the Theatre Mall staged Mandala Theatre’s production Sunkesari.Penned by none other than Satya Mohan Joshi, the play is based on a 17th century folktale that Joshi encountered on a trip to the far-western region of Nepal.

“Around 40 years back, I went to Sinja valley of Jumla, with my team, to do research

on the Khash Jati’s culture and language. There I came across the 17th century tale Sunkesari Maiya. It touched me so much that I penned the story as a drama.”

The play was also staged during the opening of Mandala Theatre two years back. Since then the play has been staged numerous times.

Speaking at the programme, Abhi Subedi said that opening a theatre on the seventh floor of a mall is both novel and challenging, while noted

theatre artist Sunil Pokharel was delighted to see his students come up with a new

venture. Similarly, other dignitaries pointed to the growth and popularity of Nepali theatre and wished for its better future.
