New Year’s Day is observed on January 1, the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian calendar as well as the Julian calendar. In pre-Christian Rome under the Julian calendar, the day was dedicated to Janus, god of gateways and beginnings, for whom January is also named. As a date in the Gregorian calendar of Christendom, New Year’s Day liturgically marked the Feast of the Naming and Circumcision of Jesus, which is still observed as such in the Anglican Church and Lutheran Church. In present day, with most countries now using the Gregorian calendar as their de facto calendar, New Year’s Day is probably the most celebrated public holiday, often observed with fireworks at the stroke of midnight as the new year starts in each time zone. Other global New Years’ Day traditions include making New Year’s resolutions and calling one’s friends and family

Earlier this week, Mark Zuckerberg made the surprise announcement that he, along with his wife Priscilla Chan, would be donating 99 percent of their Facebook shares — worth around $45 billion — to the causes of “advancing human potential” and “promoting equality.” The gesture appeared altruistic, but some have criticized the way Zuckerberg is using the money, giving it to a limited liability company rather than a charitable foundation. Now Zuckerberg has responded to those complaints, posting another message that attempts to explain why he set up the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, and what he and his wife want to do with the money.
“The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is structured as an LLC rather than a traditional foundation,” he writes. “This enables us to pursue our mission by funding non-profit organizations, making private investments and participating in policy debates.” Unlike limited liability companies, charitable foundations are restricted from investing in for-profit businesses and cannot engage in political lobbying, activities that the Facebook founder said the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative was designed to do in order to further the development of humanity.
“Charitable foundations can’t lobby politically or invest in for-profit companies”
Others have suggested that the Initiative is a giant tax avoidance scheme, specifying that by gifting shares rather than cash, Zuckerberg avoids paying higher costs in capital gains tax. He addressed this concern too, stating that “by using an LLC instead of a traditional foundation, we receive no tax benefit from transferring our shares to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, but we gain flexibility to execute our mission more effectively.” Zuckerberg said that if his intentions were to avoid tax, he could’ve simply set up a charity. “If we transferred our shares to a traditional foundation,” he wrote, “then we would have received an immediate tax benefit, but by using an LLC we do not. And just like everyone else, we will pay capital gains taxes when our shares are sold by the LLC.”
Tougher to address was criticism that Zuckerberg was being wasteful with the money — specifically, that Facebook’s billions would be used to further his own Silicon Valley-shaped worldview rather than donated to a charity that already has operations in place in the developing world. At the moment of its foundation, The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative’s intentions were woolly — advancing humanity and promoting equality without a specific roadmap for either goal — but they’re already starting to take shape. Zuckerberg used his most recent post to call out initial areas of focus for the Initiative, choosing “personalized learning, curing disease, connecting people, and building strong communities” as places it will first spend its money.
These four areas are again broad, but Zuckerberg picked out specific examples of where he has spent money before, listing accomplishments. “Our education work has been funded through a non-profit organization, Startup:Education, the recently announced Breakthrough Energy Coalition will make private investments in clean energy, and we also fund public government efforts, like the CDC Ebola response and San Francisco General Hospital.” Again justifying the decision to use an LLC rather than a charitable foundation, Zuckerberg said “what’s most important to us is the flexibility to give to the organizations that will do the best work — regardless of how they’re structured.”

Rockbitch was an expat, British, mostly female, progressive metal/goth band, best known for performing nude and incorporating sexual acts and Pagan rituals into their performances.
|Years active||1998 – 2002|
Rockbitch was originally formed in 1989 as Cat Genetica by bassist Amanda Smith-Skinner (“the Bitch”) and guitarist Tony Skinner (“the Beast”). The band was later renamed to Red Abyss, and drew in other band members from the matriarchal, polyamorous, pagan, feminist community of which Smith-Skinner was the prime founder.
Check Out performance of Rockbitch
Musically, Red Abyss drew on jazz, funk and rock influences dominated by singer Julie Worland’s Janis Joplin–influenced vocals. In time, its music took on harder punk and metal edginess. Red Abyss switched to the Rockbitch name when the lineup changed: a male drummer (Steve) was replaced by Jo Heeley. The line up varied over time with other characters such as ‘Luci the Stage Slut’, ‘The Haema-Whore’, Kali and Erzulie the Sex Magik Priestesses all making appearances.
The former two were primarily a combination of sexual performance artist and gonzo-camera team; capturing closeups of stage action to be displayed on the projection screen at the rear. They were also responsible for the cued playing of prepared art videos of subject matter relating to the songs.
At its intended last gig (at a biker festival), the decision to incorporate the orgiastic, pagan sex from its home life into the stage act gave birth to Rockbitch.
The band toured Germany, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, the UK, (but were banned from venues in Scotland), Italy, Spain, Finland, Slovenia, Czech Republic and Estonia and did a promotional tour that involved Canada (but were eventually also banned from the intended venues without having played), while instituting its new theme of liberation through sexual freedom.
Rockbitch became infamous not only for performing live sex acts, but also doing so with audience members via “The Golden Condom”. At a point during their show, a condom was tossed to the crowd and whoever caught it (male or female) was taken backstage for sexual relations with one or more band members.[dead link]
This led to critics saying they tried to use sex and paganism to sell bad music; however, fellow musicians from disciplines as varied as jazz (bassist Jonas Hellborg) have voiced their appreciation.
The members of the band lived together as a polyamorous commune in a house in France.
Rockbitch toured widely from approximately 1998 until 2002, meeting increasing resistance from authorities, particularly English, German and Norwegian town councils who often banned its concerts.
Because of the banning in Almelo in the Netherlands, Dutch TV producer TVAmsterdam caught attention on the band, and was forced by a non-Dutch “manager” to arrange a concert in Zaandam to record the show as it went, adding some extra footage to complete the documentary “Bitchcraft”.
It was local authorities, not the public itself, who caused a struggle. Babe stated in the programme Anna in Wonderland in 2002: “Rockbitch had no problem with lads out for seeing breasts, as they were a component of the audience, there were always others seeing the deeper meaning and both groups had a good time. They generally made up for a great combined atmosphere”.
Outside the UK (and censorship problems it also encountered in some states of Germany) audiences were sympathetic, particularly in the Netherlands, where they drew vast crowds of men and women from all walks of life.
The Rockbitch lineup became entirely female in 2000. Original lead guitarist Tony Skinner (known as ‘The Beast’) retired, taking over management/production. Lisa Wills (known as ‘Babe’) moved into lead guitar duties (from rhythm) while Luci, previously a “Stage Slut” (one of the nude dancers and sexual band/crowd liaisons), instead strapped on a rhythm guitar.
In 1997, Rockbitch made tabloid headlines after they played at a school for pre-teen children, although for the act they changed their name to “Rocky Beaches”, wore modest clothes, and sang non-sexual songs.
Members lent their voices to female and sexual issues, were winners of the yearly prize at the Sex Maniacs Ball (now Night of the Senses) founded by Tuppy Owens, openly voiced their admiration for sexual politics icons such as Annie Sprinkle and Betty Dodson, and generally advocated for open female sexuality as a healthy part of human nature.
After the release of its first studio album, Motor Driven Bimbo, which received critical acclaim in many countries (OOR Magazine in the Netherlands, the UK, and Japan), Rockbitch was dropped by its record company.
A second, goth-influenced album called Psychic Attack was never released.
Following continued pressure from British Interpol about its sexually driven themes and performances, Rockbitch ceased performing in 2002 and was the subject of a 30-minute documentary on BBC Choice the same year. A further, hour-long documentary was broadcast on Channel 5 in the UK in 2003.
In 2005, the entire latter-day Rockbitch lineup emerged under the name MT-TV. This was a music-only project—no sex or nudity of the Rockbitch days—but it incorporated stage theatrics. After a UK tour in summer 2005, they performed throughout the United States. The first part of their US tour was documented on the DVD ‘Shevolution’, released by Blackwing Films in 2006.
Amanda and Jo subsequently went on to form the band Syren with singer/songwriter Erin Bennett in 2006. In 2012, Jo died of breast cancer. Amanda gave up her musical career shortly after. Erin Bennett subsequently continued as a solo artist with a backing band, discarding the name Syren.
The personnel were as follows:
- Julie Worland: Vocals
- “Luci”: Guitar (from 2000, previously dancer and sex performer)
- Amanda Smith-Skinner (“the Bitch”): bass
- Nikki Fay: piano, flute
- Joanne Heeley (2 November 1972 – 11 January 2012): drums
- Lisa Wills (“Babe”): lead guitar, backing vocals (also webmistress)
- Tony Skinner (“the Beast”): guitar on Motor Driven Bimbo and producer of both studio albums
- “Chloe”: dancer, sex performer
- Suna Dasi (“Kali”): dancer, sex performer
- Martina (“Erzulie”): dancer, sex performer
- Luci’s Love Child (as Red Abyss) (1992) (Eurock)
- Rockbitch Live In Amsterdam (1997) (Crystal Rock Syndicate – doCD)
- Bitchcraft (concert and documentary video, 1997, subsequently released on DVD) not available in countries like USA, Japan
- The Bitch O’Clock News (reports and clips video, 1998) made for audiences in USA and Japan
- Motor Driven Bimbo (1999) (Steamhammer)
- Psychic Attack (unreleased) (2002)
- Sex, Death and Magick (concert/documentary video, 2002)

The world’s northern white rhinoceros population plunged by a quarter on Sunday with a death at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.
Nola, a 41-year-old northern white rhino, died after being treated for a bacterial infection and age-related health issues, the zoo said.
The rhino’s condition had worsened significantly in the last 24 hours, and zoo veterinarians made the decision to euthanize her.
Forty-one years is at the upper end of a white rhino’s life expectancy.
Nola was one of only four northern white rhinos in the world, according to the zoo. The remaining three are in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.
The northern white rhino is a subspecies of white rhino. The northern subspecies is believed to be extinct in the wild, according to the World Wildlife Fund, while the “near threatened” southern white rhino population is growing in sanctuaries.
Rhinos are the second largest land mammal after the elephant.
The San Diego Zoo is working to save the northern white rhino subspecies through the collection of genetic material and the development of assisted reproductive technologies.
The zoo tweeted about Nola’s death Sunday: “We’re devastated by the loss of Nola.”
KATHMANDU, Nepal: Finnish rock band Ancara and sign-language rapper Signmark performed in the foothills of Mount Everest (Sagarmatha) over the weekend to raise funds for a music school for children with hearing disabilities.
Dozens of music lovers cheered the musicians at Dingboche, a village at an altitude of 4,550 meters (14,900 feet) and a popular stop for trekkers and mountaineers heading to Everest and other peaks.
The performers flew to Lukla, the only airstrip in the Everest region, on Nov. 3 and trekked to the village, stopping along the way to acclimatize to the altitude.
They had hoped to perform at Everest base camp, where climbers prepare for summit attempts, but Nepalese authorities said concert permits could only be issued for areas with settlements.
Signmark, whose real name is Marko Vuo and who was born deaf, performs his raps in sign language, sometimes with others speaking the lyrics. He has performed in dozens of countries.
Funds raised by the performances will support a music school in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu.

Doctors in the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, say hospitals are running out of medicines because of a blockade by india.
The blockade has also prevented the delivery of earthquake relief supplies.
Ethnic groups from the southern plains, reportedly backed by some Indians, have been stopping supply trucks entering Nepal since September.
They are protesting against a new constitution which they say discriminates against them.
Nepal produces around 40% of its medicines internally and imports 60% from India.
Because of the blockade, Nepal is neither receiving enough new medicine from Indian nor able to produce its own supplies as raw materials have also been prevented from entering the country.
The Himalayan nation is already grappling with the aftermath of two earthquakes earlier this year that killed almost 9,000 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless.
“Hospitals have run out of essential drugs and supplies, vital social services have been disrupted and aid agencies such as Oxfam have not been able to secure fuel to deliver relief items to prepare people for the winter in earthquake-affected districts,” said Cecilia Keizer, head of Oxfam in Nepal.
The acting director general of Nepal’s Department of Drug Administration, Narayan Dhakal, says he has been asked by the WHO to assess how much medicine is left in the country.
The Manmohan Thoracic Centre in Kathmandu has said it no longer has stocks of a number of essential medicines including adrenaline, atropine and saline.
Another heart hospital in Kathmandu, Shahid Gangalal Heart Centre, has postponed bypass surgeries because it had run out of the special thread needed to sew up the heart.
Call for dialogue
As well as causing a medicine shortage, the blockade has meant towns and cities across Nepal have run low on fuel, food and general supplies. More than three quarters of Nepal’s international trade is with India, and it relies almost wholly on its southern neighbor for fuel.
Protesters in the country’s southern plains are angry with the country’s new constitution which they say discriminates against them because it fails to give them equal representation with Nepal’s other ethnic and regional groups.
The Nepalese government has accused India of unofficially backing this protest by slowing or stopping completely traffic from crossing the border into Nepal.
The Indian government has denied this, but has said it cannot allow trucks to enter Nepal while conditions are unsafe.
It has also criticized the new constitution and urged Nepal’s leaders to engage in dialogue with the protesters.
Corrupted Ganesh Thapa has been banned for 10 years for bribery by Fifa’s ethics committee.
Ganesh Thapa, president of the All-Nepal FA and a former Asian Football Confederation vice-president, is also under investigation by Nepalese authorities after being accused of embezzling millions of pounds of football development money.
Thapa was found by Fifa’s ethics committee to have “committed various acts of misconduct over several years, including the solicitation and acceptance of cash payments from another football official, for both personal and family gain”.
These were connected to the 2009 and 2011 elections for the Fifa executive committee at the Asian confederation’s congress.
Nepal’s government is investigating Thapa after he was accused of embezzling around £4m during his 19-year tenure – much of it money from Fifa and the AFC earmarked for football development projects.
Fifa’s ethics committee has also handed out a two-year ban to Viphet Sihachakr, president of the Lao Football Federation.
It said Sihachakr “solicited and accepted a payment from another football official” in relation to the 2011 election.
Meanwhile, the Court of Arbitration for Sport has confirmed it will hear an appeal by David Nakhid after his candidacy for the Fifa presidency was rejected.
The former Trinidad and Tobago international’s bid to run was rejected after Fifa’s electoral committee found that he had not presented declarations of support from at least five member associations.
It is understood he was rejected on the grounds that one national association nominated both Nakhid and another candidate.
Germany-Netherlands soccer match in Hanover canceled after suspicious package found; police ask residents to return home and avoid public gatherings.
A Germany-Netherlands soccer game in Hanover was canceled on Tuesday night, less than 90 minutes before it began, after a possible bomb was reportedly found. The incident occurred a mere four days after the coordinated terror attacks in Paris that killed at least 129.
Media outlets reported that an explosives-laden emergency vehicle had been located outside the stadium, but these reports were unconfirmed. However, a German regional minister said no explosives were found and no arrests were made in the city.
An immediate threat and terror warning was extended to all of Hanover. German Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière convened a press conference after the game’s cancelation.
A local reporter interviewed on CNN said a suspicious device was found in train station in Hanover in addition to the device found close to stadium.
Hanover’s police chief said authorities canceled the match between because they had “concrete information” about a bomb threat.

Last Friday, Ludovic Boumbas came to a café for a birthday party. At one point, the music was interrupted by gunfire. 19 people were killed among them Boumbas, who jumped in front of the bullets in order to save the life of his girlfriend.
Alongside grief and shock, stories have been popping up in recent days of heroism and sacrifice. One of them is that of Ludovic Boumbas, a Frenchman of Congolese origin who arrived at the Terrace of La Belle Café for the birthday party of his girlfriend and he sacrificed his life in order to save the life of the woman that he loved.
Boumbas, who grew up in Northern France, just “threw himself in front of the bullets in order to save a woman,” according to reports within France. The woman he saved, a waitress named Huda, was injured and evacuated to a hospital. Boumbas and 18 other people were murdered.

Nepali, Indian (Sikh and Tamil) demonstrators gathered outside Downing Street to protest against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Britain on Thursday (12 November). Modi hopes that the visit will yield trade deals worth billions of dollars and be a boost to his authority after a damaging electoral failure back home.
Nepalese and Indian Protest In UK Against Narendra Modi
The crowd of people on Whitehall chanted against the Indian Prime Minister and accused him of human rights abuses. Protester Bigyan Brasai criticised the UK for rolling out the red carpet for Modi and said Cameron needed to put pressure on him to stop blockading roads into Nepal.
“The UK should not only look into the political and commercial aspects. The UK has a rich pride and culture of raising a voice for the voiceless countries and people, and instead of the glory of the British values and culture, there is disrespect. They should keep pressure, that you [Modi], what you are doing is wrong,” he said.
Nepal adopted a secular constitution in September. Protesters said that Modi’s nationalist Hindu party, the BJP, have tried to blockade routes into the Himalayan nation to put pressure on it to stay as a Hindu state. Nepali protester Kapil Rijal said that Cameron should help to find a diplomatic solution.
“The UK is a country of democracy. We can voice ourselves here and I hope David Cameron is going to do something and talk about these issues. There is nothing that can’t be solved with diplomacy, but we need something to be done. We need a diplomacy talk going on,” he said.
Protesters said that Modi was guilty of human rights abuses, with some banners depicting him with Adolf Hitler alongside a swastika.
“There’s tens of thousands of South Asian background people living in this country, the British public. We all know what Modi is capable of and what he has done. He is complicit in war crimes. We are very, very angry that he was welcomed here, speaking in our parliament and shaking hands with the Queen and also elevated and having a party sort of thing tomorrow. We’re very angry about that. Why do we have to celebrate this criminal?” said Tamil protester Sanam.
More than 200 writers, including well-known authors, such as Salman Rushdie, Ian McEwan and Nikita Lalwani, have signed an open letter to Cameron urging him to raise concerns about freedom of expression in India during their talks. A group of counter-demonstrators, waving British and Indian flags were separated by barriers near Downing Street.
Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister since 2006 to visit Britain. He will address the British Parliament on Thursday afternoon (12 November) and lay a wreath at the Mahatma Ghandi statue in Parliament Square.
Paris (CNN)On a night when thousands of Paris residents and tourists were reveling and fans were enjoying a soccer match between France and world champion Germany, horror struck in an unprecedented manner. Terrorists — some with AK-47s, some reportedly with bombs strapped to them — attacked sites throughout the French capital and at the stadium where the soccer match was underway.
According to French officials, at least:
112 were killed at the Bataclan theater.
14 were killed on Rue Bichat at the site of the Le Petit Cambodge restaurant, in the 10th district.
19 died on Rue de Charonne in the 11th district, outside a bar called La Belle Equipe.
Four were killed on Avenue de la Republique, in the 10th district.
Four others died outside the Stade de France, in Saint-Denis, north of Paris
Scores were killed in the coordinated attacks late Friday, leaving a nation in mourning and the world in shock. CNN will update this story as information comes in:
• Paris Prosecutor spokeswoman Agnès Thibault-Lecuivre said eight extremists are dead after attacks. Seven of them were killed in suicide bombings.
• U.S. President Barack Obama spoke with French President Francois Hollande to offer condolences and assistance in the investigation, the White House said. Earlier, Obama said, “This is an attack not just on Paris, not just on the people on France, but an attack on all humanity and the universal values we share.” He called the attacks an “outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians.”
• A total of six locations were attacked in and just outside the capital, Paris prosecutor François Molins told reporters Saturday.
• Five suspected attackers have been “neutralized,” said Molins. It was unclear whether that term meant the terrorists were dead.
• A witness tells Radio France that attackers inside the Bataclan concert hall entered firing rifles and shouting “Allah akbar.”
• At least 153 people were killed in the Paris and Saint-Denis shootings and bombings, French officials said. Saint-Denis is home to the national stadium where the soccer match was being played.
• The worst carnage occurred at Bataclan, with at least 112 left dead. A journalist who was at a rock concert there escaped and told CNN: “We lied down on the floor not to get hurt. It was a huge panic. The terrorists shot at us for 10 to 15 minutes. It was a bloodbath.” Julien Pearce didn’t hear the attackers speak, but he said one friend who escaped heard them talk about Iraq and Syria. Later, he said the men were speaking French. Two men dressed in black started shooting and after wounded people fell to the floor, the gunmen shot them again, execution-style, he said.
• CNN affiliate BFMTV, citing French officials, said some gunmen were still at large.
• Charlotte Brehaut and a friend were dining in Le Petit Cambodge, a Cambodian restaurant, when the shooting started from the street, she told CNN. “All of a sudden we heard huge gunshots and glass coming through the windows. We ducked with the other diners,” she said. She grabbed the arm of a woman on the floor. The woman didn’t respond. The woman was shot in the chest and there was blood all around her. At least 14 people were killed in Le Petit Cambodge, authorities said.
Inside the Bataclan: ‘A bloodbath,’ witness says
• Four attackers were killed, including three who were wearing explosives belts, at Bataclan during the police raid, Paris police spokesman Michel Cadot told France Info radio.
• There is great alarm over the apparent methodology and likely planning that would have been needed to pull off such a series of attacks, one U.S. counterterrorism official told CNN. The attacks resembled tactics that have been used by a number of terror groups — including al Qaeda’s focus on mass casualties and visibility, and the small, tactical nature of attacks that are more the hallmark of ISIS and its acolytes. It is still not clear who is responsible.
• U.S. citizens in Paris who are safe are being asked by the State Department to call their families. Those Americans in France needing assistance should call 001-202-501-4444. Americans concerned about loved ones in Paris should call 1-888-407-4747. An official told CNN the hotline was flooded with calls.
Nepal Era (नेपाल सम्बत Nepāl Sambat) is the national lunar calendar of Nepal. The era started on 20 October 879 AD and was in widespread use for all daily purposes until the beginning of the 20th century when it came under official disapproval. Nepal Sambat appeared on coins, stone and copper plate inscriptions, royal decrees, chronicles, Hindu and Buddhist manuscripts, legal documents and correspondence.
Today, it is used for ceremonial purposes and to determine the dates to celebrate religious festivals and commemorate birthdays and death anniversaries. The year 2013-14 AD corresponds to 1134 in Nepal Sambat and 2070-71 in the Bikram Sambat or Vikram Samvat calendar.

Following a century of official neglect and even suppression, Nepal Sambat has been revived as a symbol of Nepal’s glory and national unity. In 2008, the government named it a national era. On 25 October 2011, the government decided to bring Nepal Sambat into use as the country’s national calendar, and formed a taskforce to make recommendations on its implementation. However, no action has been taken after that to bring the era into practice.
During the celebrations marking New Year’s Day of Nepal Sambat 1133 on 14 November 2012, the organizing committee demanded that Nepal Sambat too be printed on banknotes and coins while the prime minister pledged to give a public holiday on New Year’s Day from 2013.
Removal and revival
Nepal Sambat was replaced as the national calendar after the conquest of Nepal(Then Nepal referred to only kathmandu valley) by the Gorkha Kingdom in 1769. The victory of the Gorkha Kingdom resulted in the end of the Malla dynasty and the advent of the Shah dynasty. The Shahs used Saka era. However, Nepal Sambat remained in official use for a time even after the coming of the Shahs. For example, the treaty with Tibet signed during the reign of Pratap Singh Shah is dated Nepal Sambat 895 (1775 AD). It is actually the new year celebrated by 5% of the people and they are of Newar caste. The official new year of the country lies on mid April which is celebrated by millions of peoples of the country and more than billion hindu peoples around the world
In 1903, Saka Sambat in turn was superseded by Bikram Sambat as the official calendar. However, the government continued to use Saka Sambat on gold and silver coins till 1912 when it was fully replaced by Bikram Sambat.
Despite the loss of legal recognition for Nepal Sambat, many people in the Kathmandu Valley and other parts of the country have continued using the calendar for ceremonial purposes. It is used to date manuscripts, books and inscriptions. Birth and death anniversaries, and almost all the religious festivals, are observed according to the lunar calendar. Horoscopes are also based on the lunar calendar.
The government moved to restore the national status of Nepal Sambat following prolonged lobbying by cultural and social organizations, most prominently by Nepal Bhasa Manka Khala. All the major newspapers now print Nepal Sambat along with other dates on their mastheads. New Year’s Day celebrations have also spread from the Kathmandu Valley to other towns in Nepal as well as abroad.
New Year’s Day falls on the first day of the waxing moon during the Swanti festival. Traditionally, traders used to close their ledgers and open new account books on the first day of Nepal Sambat.
Newars observe New Year’s Day by performing Mha Puja (Nepal Bhasa: म्हपुजा), a ritual to purify and empower the soul for the coming New Year besides praying for longevity. During this ceremony, family members sit cross-legged in a row on the floor in front of mandalas (sand paintings) drawn for each person. Offerings are made to the mandala, and each family member is presented auspicious ritual food which includes boiled egg, smoked fish and rice wine during the Sagan ceremony.
Outdoor celebrations of the new year consist of cultural processions, pageants and rallies. Participants dressed in traditional Newar clothing like tapālan, suruwā and hāku patāsi parade on the streets. Musical bands playing various kinds of drums take part in the processions. Streets and market squares are decorated with arches, gates and banners bearing new year greetings. The president of Nepal also issues a message of greetings on the occasion of New Year’s Day.
Public functions are held in which the prime minister and other government leaders participate. Marking a break from tradition, Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai gave his speech at the New Year’s Day program in 2011 in Nepal Bhasa.
Mha Puja and Nepal Sambat are also celebrated abroad where Nepalese have settled.
Nepal Sambat movement.
The official restoration of Nepal Sambat follows a history of struggle which began in the 1920s when Dharmaditya Dharmacharya, a Buddhist and Nepal Bhasa activist based in Kolkata, began a campaign to promote it as the national calendar. The movement was continued by language and cultural activists in Nepal with the advent of democracy following the ouster of the autocratic Rana dynasty in 1951.
The demand to make Nepal Sambat a national calendar intensified with the establishment of Nepal Bhasa Manka Khala in 1979. It organized rallies and public functions publicizing the importance of the era as a symbol of nationalism. Nepal Sambat has also emerged as a symbol to rally people against the suppression of their culture, language and literature by the politically dominant ruling classes.
The Panchayat regime suppressed the movement by arresting and imprisoning the activists. In 1987 in Kathmandu, a road running event organized to mark the New Year was broken up by police and the runners thrown in jail.
The Nepal Sambat movement achieved its first success on 18 November 1999 when the government declared the founder of the calendar, a trader of Kathmandu named Sankhadhar Sakhwa (संखधर साख्वा), a national hero. On 26 October 2003, the Department of Postal Service issued a commemorative postage stamp depicting his portrait. A statue of Sankhadhar was erected in Tansen, Palpa in western Nepal on 28 January 2012.
The government has decided to set up Sankhadhar Sakhwa National Academy in the name of the founder of the era.
Nepal Sambat was started in 879 AD during the reign of King Raghav Dev to commemorate the payment of all the debts of the Nepalese people by a Nepalese trader named Sankhadhar Sakhwa. According to the legend, the astrologer of the king of Bhaktapur calculated the auspicious time and date when sand swept down by the river to the confluence of the Bhacha Khusi and Bishnumati River in Kathmandu would contain gold.
So the king sent a team of porters to Kathmandu to collect sand from the spot at the special hour. A local merchant named Sankhadhar Sakhwa saw them resting with their baskets of sand at a traveler’s shelter at Maru near Durbar Square. The men had decided to take a break before returning to Bhaktapur. Sankhadhar thought it strange that people should come all this distance just to get sand. Thinking that the sand might be special, he talked the porters into dumping their load at his home, convincing them that they could always get more.
Later, Sankhadhar found gold in his sand, while the king of Bhaktapur was left with a pile of ordinary sand which his porters had dug up after the auspicious hour had passed. Sankhadhar used the windfall to repay everybody’s debts and cancel their IOUs and start a new calendar. The name Nepal Sambat was used for the calendar for the first time in Nepal Sambat 148 (1028 AD).
Use outside Kathmandu
Nepal Sambat has also been used outside Nepal Mandala in Nepal and in other countries including India, China and Mayanmar In Gorkha, a stone inscription at the Bhairav Temple at Pokharithok Bazaar contains the date Nepal Sambat 704 (1584 AD). An inscription in the Nepali language at a resthouse in Salyankot is dated Nepal Sambat 912 (1792 AD).
In east Nepal, an inscription on the Bidyadhari Ajima Temple in Bhojpur recording the donation of a door and tympanum is dated Nepal Sambat 1011 (1891 AD). The Bindhyabasini Temple in Bandipur in west Nepal contains an inscription dated Nepal Sambat 950 (1830 AD) recording the donation of a tympanum.
The Palanchowk Bhagawati Temple situated to the east of Kathmandu contains an inscription recording a land donation dated Nepal Sambat 861 (1741 AD). An inscription on a stupa in Panauti is dated Nepal Sambat 866 (1746 AD).
Similarly, Nepalese merchants based in Tibet (Lhasa Newars) used Nepal Sambat in their official documents, correspondence and inscriptions recording votive offerings. A copper plate recording the donation of a tympanum at the shrine of Chhwaskamini Ajima (Tibetan: Palden Lhamo) in the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa is dated Nepal Sambat 781 (1661 AD).
Nepal Sambat, a lunar calendar, is a variant of the Saka era Hindu calendar with the main difference being that Nepal Sambat lags behind the Saka era by 802 years. It consists of 354 days per year, due to the fact that a lunar month has 29 or 30 days based on the movement of the moon. So an intercalary month is added every third year.
This calendar came into being and into official use during the reign of king Raghavdev, immediately after the completion of the Saka Sambat 802 (on 20 October 879 AD). The year 804 was approaching within a year and according to legend, his decision was guided by his fear of the number 804, that some people still believe, brings misfortune. People with traditional belief still try to escape with number 8 that comes together with 12. Doing math correctly, 804 adds up to 12 and 804 means 8 along with 12.
Nepal Sambat is a unique calendar in the sense that all other calendars are named after rulers or religious leaders. Nepal Sambat is the only calendar which is named after a country.

Many Many Happy returns of Day
Hedy Lamarr (/ˈhɛdi/; born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, 9 November 1914 – 19 January 2000) was an Austrian and American film actress and inventor. After an early and brief film career in Germany, which included a controversial love-making scene in the film Ecstasy (1933), she fled her husband and secretly moved to Paris. There, she met MGM head Louis B. Mayer, who offered her a movie contract in Hollywood, where she became a film star from the late 1930s to the 1950s.
Lamarr appeared in numerous popular feature films, including Algiers (1938) with Charles Boyer, I Take This Woman (1940) with Spencer Tracy, Comrade X (1940) with Clark Gable, Come Live With Me (1941) with James Stewart, H.M. Pulham, Esq. (1941) with Robert Young, and Samson and Delilah (1949) with Victor Mature. Director Max Reinhardt called her the “most beautiful woman in Europe,” a sentiment widely shared by her audiences and critics.

At the beginning of World War II, keen to aid the Allied war effort, Lamarr identified jamming of Allied radio communications by the Axis as a particular problem, and with composer George Antheil, developed spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat it. Though the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of her work are now incorporated into modern Wi-Fi, CDMA and Bluetooth technology, and this work led to her being inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
Early life and European film career
Lamarr was born Jewish as Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler in 1914 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, the only child of Gertrud “Trude” Kiesler (née Lichtwitz; 3 February 1894 – 27 February 1977) and Emil Kiesler (27 December 1880 – 14 February 1935). Her father was born in Lemberg (nowadays Lviv in Ukraine) and was a successful bank director. He died before the Holocaust, and later Hedy, through her influence as an actress, was able to rescue her mother from this plight.
Her mother was a pianist and Budapest native who came from the “Jewish haute bourgeoisie”. Stephen Michael Shearer, a Lamarr biographer, asserts that Lamarr’s mother had converted from Judaism to Catholicism and was a “practising Christian”.
In the late 1920s, Lamarr was discovered as an actress and brought to Berlin by producer Max Reinhardt. Following her training in the theater, she returned to Vienna, where she began to work in the film industry, first as a script girl, and soon as an actress.
In early 1933, at age 18, she starred in Gustav Machatý’s film, Ecstasy (Ekstase in German, Extase in Czech), which was filmed in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Lamarr’s role was that of a neglected young wife married to an indifferent older man. The film became notorious for showing Lamarr’s face in the throes of orgasm as well as close-up and brief nude scenes in which she is seen swimming and running through the woods.
At the age of 19, on 10 August 1933, Lamarr married Friedrich Mandl, a wealthy Austrian military arms merchant. He objected to what he felt was exploitation of his wife and “the expression on her face” during the simulated orgasm in Ecstasy. He purportedly bought up as many copies of the film as he could find in an attempt to restrict its public viewing. In her autobiography, she insists that all sexual activity in the film was simulated, and that the orgasm was simulated using “method acting reality” (the film director off-screen pricking her with a safety-pin).
Reputed to be the third richest man in Austria, Mandl was a munitions manufacturer. In her autobiography Ecstasy and Me, Lamarr described Mandl as extremely controlling, preventing her from pursuing her acting career and keeping her a virtual prisoner, confined to their castle home, Schloss Schwarzenau. Although half-Jewish himself, Mandl had close social and business ties to the fascist government of Italy and nazi government of Germany, selling munitions to Mussolini. Lamarr wrote that Mussolini and Hitler had attended lavish parties hosted at the Mandl home. Mandl had her accompany him to business meetings, where he conferred with scientists and other professionals involved in military technology. These conferences were her introduction to the field of applied science and the ground that nurtured her latent talent in science.
Lamarr’s marriage to Mandl eventually became unbearable, and she decided to separate herself from both him and her country. She wrote in her autobiography that she disguised herself as her maid and fled to Paris. However, rumors claimed that Lamarr persuaded Mandl to let her wear all of her jewelry for a dinner, then disappeared.
Move to the United States
Hollywood film career
After escaping her husband, she fled to Paris in 1937, where she met Louis B. Mayer, who was scouting for talent in Europe. Mayer hired her but insisted that she change her name to Hedy Lamarr—she had been known as “the Ecstasy lady”—choosing the surname in homage to the beautiful silent film star, Barbara La Marr, who had died in 1926 from tuberculosis. Upon arriving in Hollywood in 1938, Mayer promoted her as the “world’s most beautiful woman.”
She received good reviews for her American film debut in Algiers (1938) with Charles Boyer, who asked that Lamarr be cast after meeting her at a party. In Hollywood, she was invariably cast as the archetypal glamorous seductress of exotic origins. Lamarr played opposite the era’s most popular leading men. Her many films include Boom Town (1940) with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy, Comrade X with Gable, White Cargo (1942), Tortilla Flat (1942) with Tracy and John Garfield, H. M. Pulham, Esq. (1941) with Robert Young, and Dishonored Lady (1947). In 1941, Lamarr was cast alongside Lana Turner and Judy Garland in Ziegfeld Girl.
Lamarr made 18 films from 1940 to 1949 even though she had two children during that time (in 1945 and 1947). After leaving MGM in 1945, she enjoyed her biggest success as Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille’s Samson and Delilah, the highest-grossing film of 1949, with Victor Mature as the Biblical strongman. However, following her comedic turn opposite Bob Hope in My Favorite Spy (1951), her career went into decline. She appeared only sporadically in films after 1950, one of her last roles being that of Joan of Arc in Irwin Allen’s critically panned epic, The Story of Mankind (1957). White Cargo, one of Lamarr’s biggest hits at MGM, contains, arguably, her most memorable film quote delivered with hints of a provocative invitation: “I am Tondelayo. I make tiffin for you?” This line typifies many of Lamarr’s roles, which emphasized her beauty and sexuality but were light on lines. The lack of acting challenges bored Lamarr, and she turned to inventing to relieve her boredom.
At the beginning of the war, she was told that she could better help the war effort by using her celebrity status to sell war bonds, which she did with great success. But she wanted to do more, particularly by using her interest in science to aid in the defeat of Nazism.
Lamarr’s earliest inventions include an improved traffic stoplight and a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a carbonated drink. The beverage was unsuccessful; Lamarr herself said it tasted like Alka-Seltzer.
Lamarr’s reputation as an inventor is based on her co-creation of a frequency-hopping system with George Antheil, an avant garde composer and neighbor of Lamarr in California. During World War II, Lamarr was inspired to contribute to the war effort, and focused her efforts on countering torpedoes. In her home, explains author Richard Rhodes during an interview on CBS, she devoted a room to drafting her designs for frequency-hopping.
Lamarr and Antheil discussed the fact that radio-controlled torpedoes, while important in the naval war, could easily be jammed by broadcasting interference at the frequency of the control signal, causing the torpedo to go off course. Lamarr had learned something about torpedoes during her marriage to Mandl. Lamarr and Antheil developed the idea of using frequency hopping to avoid jamming. This was achieved by using a piano roll to unpredictably change the signal sent between a control center and the torpedo at short bursts within a range of 88 frequencies in the radio-frequency spectrum (there are 88 black and white keys on a piano keyboard).
The specific code for the sequence of frequencies would be held identically by the controlling ship and in the torpedo. It would be practically impossible for the enemy to jam all 88 frequencies, as it would require too much power. The frequency-hopping sequence was controlled by a player-piano mechanism, which Antheil had earlier used to score his Ballet Mécanique.
On 11 August 1942, U.S. Patent 2,292,387 was granted to Hedy Kiesler Markey, Lamarr’s married name at the time, and George Antheil. Although novel, this early version of frequency hopping soon met with opposition from the U.S. Navy and was not adopted. The idea was not implemented in the U.S. until 1962, when it was used by U.S. military ships during a blockade of Cuba after the patent had expired. Lamarr’s work was honored in 1997, when the Electronic Frontier Foundation gave her a belated award for her contributions. In 1998, an Ottawa wireless technology developer, Wi-LAN Inc., acquired a 49% claim to the patent from Lamarr for an undisclosed amount of stock.
Lamarr’s and Antheil’s frequency-hopping idea served as a basis for modern spread-spectrum communication technology, such as GPS, Bluetooth, COFDM (used in Wi-Fi network connections), and CDMA (used in some cordless and wireless cell phones). Blackwell, Martin, and Vernam’s 1920 patent seems to lay the communications groundwork for Lamarr and Antheil’s patent, which employed the techniques in the autonomous control of torpedoes.
Fundraising for the war effort
Lamarr wanted to join the National Inventors Council, but was reportedly told by NIC member Charles F. Kettering and others that she could better help the war effort by using her celebrity status to sell War Bonds. Lamarr participated in a war bond selling campaign with a sailor named Eddie Rhodes. Rhodes would be in the crowd at each Lamarr appearance, and she would call him up on stage. She would briefly flirt with him before asking the audience if she should give him a kiss. The crowd would of course say yes, to which Hedy would reply that she would if enough people bought war bonds. After enough bonds were purchased, she would give Rhodes his kiss, and he would head back into the audience. Then they would head off to the next war bond rally.
In the 1990s, Lamarr and Antheil got the recognition they deserved for their invention. They received such awards as the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award and the BULBIEª Gnass Spirit of Achievement Bronze Award, given to individuals whose creative lifetime achievements in the arts, sciences, business, or invention fields have significantly contributed to society.
In addition, her technological contributions have been featured on the Science Channel and the Discovery Channel.
Lamarr and Antheil were inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
Lamarr became a naturalized citizen of the United States on 10 April 1953, at age 38. In 1966, she was arrested for shoplifting in Los Angeles. The charges were eventually dropped. In 1991, she was arrested on the same charge in Florida, this time for US$21.48 worth of laxatives and eye drops. She pleaded “no contest” to avoid a court appearance, and in return for a promise to refrain from breaking any laws for a year, the charges were once again dropped.
According to her autobiography Ecstasy and Me (1966), while attempting to flee her husband, Fritz Mandl, she reputedly slipped into a brothel and hid in an empty room. While her husband searched the brothel, a man entered the room and she had sex with him so she could remain unrecognized. She was finally successful in escaping when she hired a new maid who resembled her; she drugged the maid and used her uniform as a disguise to escape.
Lamarr later sued the publisher, saying that many of the anecdotes in the book, which was described by a judge as “filthy, nauseating, and revolting,” were fabricated by its ghost writer, Leo Guild. She was also sued in Federal Court by Gene Ringgold, who asserted the actress’s autobiography contained material from an article about her life which he wrote in 1965 for a magazine called Screen Facts.
The publication of her autobiography took place about a year after the accusations of shoplifting and a year after Andy Warhol’s short film Hedy (1966). The shoplifting charges coincided with a failed attempt to return to the screen in Picture Mommy Dead (1966). The role was ultimately filled by Zsa Zsa Gabor. Ecstasy and Me begins in a despondent mood, with this reference:
On a recent evening, sitting home alone suffering and brooding about my treatment at the police station because of an incident in a department store, and being replaced by Zsa Zsa Gabor in a motion picture (imagine how that pleased the ego!) I figured out that I had made – and spent – some thirty million dollars. Yet earlier that day I had been unable to pay for a sandwich at Schwab’s drug store.
The 1970s was a decade of increasing seclusion for Lamarr. She was offered several scripts, television commercials, and stage projects, but none piqued her interest. In 1974, she filed an invasion of privacy lawsuit for US$10 million for an unauthorized use of her name (i.e. “Hedley Lamarr” in Mel Brooks’ comedy film Blazing Saddles); the case was settled out of court. With failing eyesight, she retreated from public life and settled in Miami Beach, Florida, in 1981.
For several years beginning in 1997, the boxes of CorelDRAW’s software suites were graced by a large Corel-drawn image of Lamarr. The picture won CorelDRAW’s yearly software suite cover design contest in 1996. Lamarr sued Corel for using the image without her permission. Corel countered that she did not own rights to the image. The parties reached an undisclosed settlement in 1998.
For her contribution to the motion picture industry, Hedy Lamarr has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6247 Hollywood Blvd.
In her later years, Lamarr turned to plastic surgery to preserve the looks she was terrified of losing. Lamarr had to endure disastrous results. “She had her breasts enlarged, her cheeks raised, her lips made bigger, and much, much more” said Anthony. “She had plastic surgery thinking it could revive her looks and her career, but it backfired and distorted her beauty”. Anthony Loder also claimed that Lamarr was addicted to pills.
Lamarr became estranged from her adopted son, James Lamarr Loder, when he was 12 years old. Their relationship ended abruptly and he moved in with another family. They did not speak again for almost 50 years. Lamarr left James Loder out of her will and he sued for control of the US$3.3 million estate left by Lamarr in 2000.
Later media appearances
In the last decades of her life the telephone became her only means of communication with the outside world, even with her children and close friends. She often talked up to six or seven hours a day on the phone, but she hardly spent any time with anyone in person in her final years. A documentary, Calling Hedy Lamarr, was released in 2004. Lamarr’s children, Anthony Loder and Denise Loder-DeLuca, were featured in the documentary.
An Off-Broadway play, Frequency Hopping, features the lives of Lamarr and Antheil. The play was written and staged by Elyse Singer in 2008, and the script won a prize for best new play about science and technology from STAGE.
The 2010 New York Public Library exhibit, Thirty Years of Photography at the New York Public Library included a photo of a topless Lamarr (ca. 1930) by Austrian-born American photographer Trude Fleischmann.
The story of Lamarr’s frequency-hopping spread-spectrum invention was explored in an episode of the Science Channel show Dark Matters: Twisted But True, a series which explores the darker side of scientific discovery and experimentation, which premiered on 7 September 2011. Her story was also featured in the premiere episode of the Discovery Channel show How We Invented the World.
According to actress Anne Hathaway, her portrayal of Catwoman in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises was based on Lamarr.
On 20 May 2010, Hedy Lamarr was chosen from 150 IT people to be featured in a short film launched by the British Computer Society (BCS).
On 9 November 2015, the 101st anniversary of her birth, Google paid tribute to Hedy Lamarr’s work in film and her contributions to scientific advancement with an animated Google Doodle.
Lamarr died in Casselberry, Florida, on 19 January 2000, aged 85. Her death certificate cited three causes: heart failure, chronic valvular heart disease, and arteriosclerotic heart disease. Her death coincided with her daughter Denise’s 55th birthday. Her son Anthony Loder took her ashes to Austria and spread them in the Vienna Woods, in accordance with her last wishes.
Lamarr was given an honorary grave in Vienna’s Central Cemetery in 2014.
Marriages and relationships
Lamarr was married six times. She adopted a son, James, in 1939 during her second marriage to Gene Markey. She went on to have two biological children, Denise (b. 1945) and Anthony (b. 1947), with her third husband, actor John Loder, who also adopted James. The following is a list of her marriages:

The couple lived at 2727 Benedict St in Los Angeles, California during their marriage.
- John Loder (married 1943–1947), actor. Children: Denise Loder (born 19 January 1945), married Larry Colton, a writer and former baseball player, and Anthony Loder (born 1 February 1947), married Roxanne who worked for illustrator James McMullan. Nov 10, 2015- The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has said that it would not be able to distribute fuel for the moment, as it has run out of stock, while imports from India have come to a halt since the past five days.
At a press conference here on Monday, NOC Director Gopal Bahadur Khadka said that fuel cannot be provided at the moment to the consumers as efforts to import fuel have failed while alternative measures have yet to be found despite continuous efforts. “Our homework (to import fuel) seems to have been insufficient, alternative means have not worked, so fuel supply will not be easy at the moment.”
He also said that the fuel supply will not ease unless the government designates any company to import fuel along with the determination of the price for it. The problem must be addressed at a higher level, Khadka said.
The NOC Director also appealed all to not queue before the fuel stations until a notice is released from the NOC in that regard.
Transit points with China has been used as an alternative to bring in petroleum products but not cooking gas. The efforts to import LPG from Bangladesh have also not bore fruit. Of the 1,300 kilo litres of petrol granted by China, 655 kilo litres have already been brought to Nepal.
Khadka said though 22 companies had responded to the call for letter of intent to import fuel, it was difficult for the private sector to immediately bring in fuel as that would require a significant amount of money.
The NOC however said it has some reserve meant only for special and emergency purpose.
It may be noted that domestic flights too have been grounded after the demand for aviation fuel could not be met.

Petrol Distribution for private vehicle according to lot system from Thursday to Saturday
Nov 2, 2015- The Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has decided to distribute petrol to private vehicles for three days starting Thursday. The fuel will be distributed to private bikes based on lot system through 50 petrol pumps on a given day. However, no government vehicles would be given fuel as part of the distribution plan. This is the second time the government decided to distribute petrol to private vehicles after Indian imposed unofficial blockade against Nepal since September 23. However, the NOC is distributing the fuel from its previous stock. Meanwhile, the 12 tankers carrying fuel gifted by China from Rasuwa arrived at Thankot depot of NOC and unloaded the fuel into the bulk containers at Thankot storage facility. The tankers that left from Rasuwa on Monday morning arrived in the Capital this evening. On Friday and Saturday, 12 tankers went to the bordering Chinese town of Kerung to fetch the fuel gifted by China. Officials said the tankers have brought 80,000 litres of oil in the first lot. The NOC will conduct quality and standard test before distributing the Chinese fuel.

A powerful earthquake has struck northern Afghanistan, with tremors felt as widely as Pakistan and northern India.
The magnitude 7.5 quake was centered in the mountainous Hindu Kush region, 45km (28 miles) south-west of Jarm, the US Geological Survey reported.
In Pakistan, local news channels showed people evacuating office buildings.
There is no official word on casualties but one report said four people had been killed in north-west Pakistan.
Officials said the quake happened at a depth of 212km (133 miles). The magnitude was initially put at 7.7 but later downgraded.
A BBC correspondent in the Pakistani city of Lahore said phone lines were down following the quake.
People in the Indian capital Delhi ran into the streets after the tremor struck and schools and offices were evacuated. The Delhi metro was also briefly halted.
David Rothery, a professor of planetary geosciences at the UK’s Open University, said the quake had the potential to be very damaging.
“Fortunately it occurred at a depth of more than 200km and so the shaking of the ground surface was less than it would have been for a shallower earthquake of the same magnitude,” he said.
The region has a history of powerful earthquakes caused by the northward collision of India with central Asia.
In 2005, a magnitude 7.6 quake in Pakistan-administered Kashmir left more than 75,000 people dead.
In April this year, Nepal suffered its worst earthquake on record with 9,000 people killed and about 900,000 homes damaged or destroyed.

Boobies are Fantastic… We all think so. And what better way to express the way we feel than to support a full day of boobie freedom??
Women are magnificent creatures, and so are their breasts. Let us spend the day unleashing boobies from their boobie zoos.
Ladies, free your breasts for 24 hours by removing those dreadful (but at times oh-so-helpful) bras. Our perkiness should not be hidden. It is time that the world see what we were blessed with. Your breasts might be colossal, adorable, miniature, full, jiggly, fancy, sensitive, glistening, bouncy, smooth, tender, still blossoming, rosy, plump, fun, silky, Jello-like, fierce, jolly, nice, naughty, cuddly… But the most used word to describe your breasts on July 9th should be FREE!
Poonam Pandey goes braless again on ‘No Bra Day’
Gentlemen, you can participate too! Your job will be to support us ladies by rocking something purple. It can be a purple tie, purple boxers, purple socks, the NNBD button or t-shirt.. If it is purple or with the NNBD logo, it supports us. (Your support means quite a lot to us…)
If wearing a bra on this day is absolutely necessary, you can definitly show your support by wearing something purple.
Yay for boobies!
P.S. Ladies…. Wearing a white t-shirt on this day is not only acceptable, but encouraged!

A salt mine located on the bank of Narsang river in Chusang VDC of Mustang is lying unused for the past two years. No salt is being extracted from the mine located 10 hours walking distance from Jomsom. For hundreds of years, locals had been extracting and using the salt from the mine. They have stopped using the local resource after getting imported salt at a cheaper price. There are 12 springs on the bank of the river that release salty water. Salt was made by evaporating the water. Locals said the mine is not being used due to geographical remoteness of the site. Mine operator Bam Prasad Gauchan, who had been operating it after an agreement with Salt Trading Corporation, said lack of skilled manpower and failure to compete with imported salt forced them to shut the mine.
Until a few years ago, the salt extracted from Mustang, which is also called salt from Bhot, was widely used in Myagdi, Baglung, Parvat and many other districts. Gauchan said up to 100 quintals of salt was extracted from the mine in the past. Though the salt lacked sufficient iodine, residents of Mustang were never dependent on imported salt for their salt demand before the mine was closed. Fulmaya Gauchan of Jomsom said the salt from the mine had medicinal properties.

Nepali Festival Buṅga Dyaḥ Jātrā (Newar: बुंग द्यः जात्रा) is a chariot procession honoring the Buddhist deity of compassion Avalokiteśvara held in Lalitpur, Nepal. It is one of the greatest religious events in the city and the longest chariot festival celebrated in the country.
Buṅga Dyaḥ is also known as Raktalokitesvara Karunamaya and Rāto Machhindranāth and is revered as the giver of rain. The name Rato Machhendranath means Red Machhendranath in a reference to the color of the deity’s image. The chariot festival is held according to the lunar calendar, so the date is changeable. It begins on the 4th day of the bright fortnight of Bachhalā, the seventh month in the lunar Nepal Sambat calendar.
|Also called||Rato Machhendranath Jatra|
|Observed by||Nepalese, Newar|
|Significance||Spreads peace in the city|
The chariot procession was instituted to celebrate the arrival of Bunga Dyah in Nepal and the end of a devastating drought. It was started when Narendra Deva was the king (640-683 AD).
Preparations for the festival begin with the construction of a 60-foot tall chariot at Pulchok at the western end of Lalitpur. When the chariot is complete, the image of Bunga Dyah from his temple is installed in it. Revellers then drag the chariot through the streets of Lalitpur on a tour that lasts a month. The chariot of Bunga Dyah is accompanied on the journey by a similar but smaller chariot of Chākuwā Dyah (चाकुवा द्यः). The deity is another Bodhisattva and is also known as Minnāth.
The route of the chariot procession starts at Pulchok and passes through Gabahal, Hakha, Sundhara, Lagankhel and ends at Jawalakhel. As per time-honored tradition, the chariot is pulled exclusively by women on the stretch between the localities of Iti and Thati. This part of the chariot procession is known as Yākah Misāyā Bhujyā (याकः मिसाया भुज्या).
The parade finishes at the open ground of Jawalakhel which is situated at the western side of Lalitpur. There, the festivities conclude with the ceremony of Bhoto Jatra, the display of the bhoto, a traditional Nepalese vest.
Bhoto Jatra, which literally means “vest festival”, is the climax of the chariot procession of Bunga Dyah Jatra. After the two chariots arrive in Jawalakhel, astrologers choose an auspicious date to hold the Bhoto Jatra festival. On the appointed day in the presence of the head of state, a government official climbs on to the chariot and holds up a jewel-studded black vest from the four sides of the chariot so that all the people gathered around can have a look at it.
The display is a re-enactment of an event that happened eons ago. According to legend, a Jyapu (Newar farmer) lost the vest which he had received as a gift from the serpent god Karkotaka Naga for doing him a favour. One day, the farmer had come to Jawalakhel to watch the chariot pulling festival where he saw someone wearing his missing garment.
A quarrel ensued over the vest, and since neither party could prove ownership, it was agreed that the undershirt would be kept with Bunga Dyah until the rightful owner comes to claim it with adequate proof. Since then, the vest has been shown to the public annually as a call to potential claimants to step forward.
The living goddess Kumari of Patan also arrives in Jawalakhel to observe Bhoto Jatra. She watches the ceremony from a special rest house. The auspicious day when the Bhoto Jatra is held is determined by astrologers, so the date is changeable. In 2014, the vest showing will be held on 22 June.
After the festival, the chariot is dismantled and the parts are stored until it is time for the procession the next year. Rato Machhendranath is taken to a temple in the nearby village of Bungamati, also known as the second home of the rain god. The deity spends the next six months in that temple.
